Anxiety can make people think that there is something is "wrong" with them. In reality anxiety is experienced by everyone and it helps our bodies prepare to deal with real danger. Sometimes our bodies can interpret a situation as dangerous activating our body's Fight-Flight-Freeze response when in reality there is no real danger. People can also be pre-occupied with the worry of what may happen in the future. The physical symptoms of anxiety can include stomach aches, increased heart rate, difficulty sleeping and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include rumination, racing thoughts and worry. The first step to successfully managing anxiety is to learn to understand and recognize it. Self-awareness is essential. Counselling can help the person identity what irrational thoughts may be feeding their anxiety and how to develop more realistic thinking.
Addiction Counselling is the process of increasing the client's awareness of how the addiction affects the different aspects of his or her life. This form of counselling also explores the client's emotions and thoughts, promotes overall wellness (social, physical, mental and spiritual), manages cravings and develops healthy coping methods. Clients who are struggling with addiction may also have other mental health concerns; these issues can be worked on concurrently. I also work with the family and friends who are affected by someone's addiction, so that they are able to continue or improve their own personal wellness.
